Complete with custom fire pits and hotel-style Airstream trailers, the latest US ‘glampsite’ from AutoCamp will open next spring in Cape Cod. Erica Jamieson reports
In collaboration with trailer company Airstream, the AutoCamp Cape Cod site will feature 108 mobile accommodations including custom, 9.5-metre-long, “silver bullet” Airstream trailers, plus seasonal luxury tents (available April to October), and ADA-accessible X-suites.
A far-cry from caravans of the past, amenities in the Airstream trailers will include Tempur-Pedic mattresses, flatscreen TVs, modern kitchenettes with Barebones Living cookware, sofa beds and organic blankets by Coyuchi. Meanwhile, en suite “spa-inspired” bathrooms will feature walk-in showers, robes and natural Ursa Major skincare products. Each unit will also come with a private deck, a custom-designed Stahl fire pit and BBQ accessories, while low lighting across the property will allow guests to stargaze.
At the heart of the car-free site, a two-storey Signature Clubhouse will serve locally sourced food and drink. There will also be a shop selling s’mores kits, snacks, beer, wine and clothes, as well as community fire pits and lounge areas, alongside private meeting and event spaces. Weekly organised activities include yoga, beer and cider tastings, and music by the campfire. During the day, guests can explore the coastline via the 11 mile-long Shining Sea Bikeway, or visit interactive art installations in the wooded grounds. The site is five minutes from downtown historic Falmouth and Woods Hole, and there are daily ferries to Martha’s Vineyard.
AutoCamp currently owns and operates luxury US glampsites in Santa Barbara, Russian River Valley, and Yosemite National Park, and has partnered with Airstream since 2016 on two developments. This will be their first venture on the East Coast.
As part of the AutoCamp’s commitment to preserving natural ecosystems, the company says it will restore over 2,000 sqm of wetlands with native plants on the property, which will expand local wetland habitat, reduce water runoff into local waterways, and support native pollinator plants.
Looking forward, the two companies have reached an agreement designating Airstream as the official and exclusive lodging partner for future AutoCamp properties. It was anticipated that new developments would be announced within the next year, though it is unclear how Covid-19 will affect these plans.
“For decades, Airstream has served as a symbol of adventure, iconic design, and American culture,” said Neil Dipaola, founder and CEO of AutoCamp, in Forbes. “We are excited to begin this new chapter in our partnership with Airstream, and continue to create memorable experiences for a new generation of travellers looking to connect with the outdoors.”
Bookings start from US$129 per night, for up to four people, from March 2021 (the site was originally scheduled to open early 2020 but the coronavirus pandemic forced it to close). AutoCamp Cape Cod is within driving distance of Boston (1.5 hours) and New York City (3.5 hours).
The Autocamp proposition will be a particularly compelling one for travellers in the age of coronavirus, who will see the outdoors as the safest place to holiday.
According to peer-to-peer RV rental marketplace RVshare, it has achieved its highest recorded booking numbers in company history, with a 650 per cent rise in RV rental bookings since early April.
